Heaty Weather: What To Eat & What To Avoid Eating

By Alpro Pharmacy

March 26, 2024

In scorching temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees celsius, Malaysia is no stranger to heat waves, which can lead to heat strokes if precautions aren’t taken. To keep cool and avoid dehydration during these sweltering days, consider these simple yet essential tips:

1) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate:

Water is your best friend in hot weather. Aim for 2.5L to 3.0L per day, divided into 8 glasses of 250ml each. Spread your hydration throughout the day, including during Iftar, Isyak, Moreh, and Sahur for those who are fasting.

  • 2 Glasses during Iftar
  • 2 Glasses during Isyak
  • 2 Glasses during Moreh
  • 2 Glasses during Sahur

If you find it challenging to guzzle down plain water, soups are a flavorful alternative, but watch out for the salt content.

Additional tips for fasting individuals and those needing to control water intake:

Limit salty foods: REDUCING the intake of salty foods is advisable as they can increase thirst and disrupt fluid balance in the body.

2) Freshen up with fruits and veggies

Load up on fruits and vegetables with high water content to quench your thirst naturally. Reach for juicy fruits like watermelon (92% water content), coconut water (95% water content), honeydew melon (90% water content), strawberries (91% water content), oranges (87% water content).

Vegetables such as cucumber (95% water content), iceberg lettuce (96% water content), celery (95% water content), radishes (95% water content), and spinach (91% water content) are also another great source for body hydration. They not only provide hydration but also essential vitamins and minerals. Aim for at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day (2 servings of fruits and 3 servings of vegetables).

3) Say no to dehydrating drinks

Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages act as diuretics, promoting urine production and potentially leading to dehydration. During hot weather, it’s recommended to reduce or completely avoid these beverages to maintain hydration levels and prevent dehydration.

Remember, dehydration can lead to serious health issues, especially during the El Nino Phenomenon. Prevention is always better than cure, so prioritise staying hydrated and making wise food and beverage choices during heaty weather conditions. Let’s take care and take control over our own wellbeing today!
